My name is Stan.  I’ve been helping people buy and sell boats so long that I still remember when a sale was golden with a handshake.  Why is that important to you? New “salespeople” generally do not know what features will totally satisfy their needs and desires, they would never think of on their own, unless they were brought up by a truly experienced person. These are the important things to present when selling a yacht or what potential problems to check for when buying one.

Years ago I had an opportunity to help a man named Jack. He was about to sign his life away on a high end sailing yacht that was at the extreme top end of what he could reasonably afford. He was committed and literally hours away from wetting the ink to paper. He happened to notice my business card laying on his best friends table, looked at it and decided to give me a call and asked me to review the contract for him.

I looked at the yachts details and then asked him one question that surprised him and knocked him off his feet. I simply asked "Where do you live"? When he replied, I said, "Buying that yacht would be a bad idea". Jack asked "Why"? I explained that the mast on the yacht he is about to purchase tipped out at 57', but the bridge he would have to pass under on each trip only afforded a 46' clearance at high tide. Jack decided that buying the yacht would have been a distaster. The great news is that I was able to assist Jack in purchasing a yacht he even loved more and at a lower price so he had extra funds to purchase the options he could not have on the prior one of interest.

OK Seller....true story,

A captain named Gary listed his yacht with me. A 2001 yacht with 290 hours on it. He bought it new and did not use it very much because he had an RV and they traveled a great deal across the country. It so happened that his boat slip was being repaired so he asked if I could put his boat in one of my slips during the sales process. I said sure, then he also added that he was going on an RV trip with his wife and if a deal was consummated, he would have the title with him.

Well, I found a buyer who was a very precise and knowledgeable buyer. He desired to hire a surveyor so I decided to take the yacht out for a test run so that I was not going to be surprised about any negatives. Well while out running it a cruise speed the engine quit. I had to get towed in. While, back in my slip I called a reputable mechanic that I had confidence in to evaluate the problem. IT WAS A MAJOR OVERHAUL. So now I had to arrange for the work to be done at a Mercruiser dealer so the buyer who lived 200 miles away would have the work guaranteed by any Merc. dealer. It took some tact and salesmanship to get the buyer to understand that he was getting like a new boat. He not only waited for the work to be completed I even talked him in to raising his offered price. This is all going the extra mile for my clients.
